at: Lot 3, Section 55, Hundred of
Gosse,
Kangaroo Island SA 5223 to accommodate its educational program.
a growing need
The development of a retreat centre on Kangaroo Island in
1994 was done primarily to accommodate the increasing numbers
of people in Australia interested in studying the philosophies
of Tibetan Buddhism in a western setting, and providing the
conditions for the intensive study
in retreat conditions of these philosophies.
Census statistics relating
to religious persuasion clearly indicate the increasing numbers
of Australians following Buddhist teachings.
planning
For many years our principal effort has been to set in place
detailed and thorough plans for
the centre's future development. It was seen as essential
to gain all the relevant and necessary government approvals
before seeking donations from our supporters.
the buildings
The primary purpose of the buildings is to promote the
study, practice and preservation of the Gelugpa
School of Tibetan Buddhism.
the master plan
A Public Teaching Hall,
underneath the Enlightenment Stupa.
A main gompa or meditation
hall for classes and meditation practice.
Twelve retreat houses
for teacher and student accommodation.
A Group Retreat Facility
including a library and lounge for private study and discussion
groups, which will also include an administrative office,
kitchen, laundry, toilets, and bathrooms. An inner courtyard
will also provide an outdoors educational setting.
current building activity
One retreat house has
been completed, a second is almost completed (as of May, 2002),
and a third is scheduled to begin construction in October
this year.
Of the other buildings, a major fundraising effort is being
conducted in the second half of 2002 to enable construction
of the Enlightenment Stupa

It is planned for foundations to be laid in October, 2002.
