The rings, umbrella , sun and moon - This copperwork is for the 'spire' of the Stupa.
The 13 rings represent the stages of progression towards enlightenment for those on the Bodhisattva's path. This involves taking a vow to work towards enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. Once the first direct perception of emptiness/voidness has been attained, other stages follow.
The umbrella represents Bodhicitta, or the heart of loving-kindness which encompasses all. The moon (bright but cool) symbolises compassion, and the sun, wisdom. Inside the sun will be a jewel (already sponsored) which indicates the attainment of Buddhahood. All is fashioned from copper and real gold by some of the finest craftsmen in the Kathmandu valley in Nepal, who hold an artisan tradition stretching back millennia.
The Ghorkim - This is the ornate frame for the recess in the vase of the Stupa, where the Buddha sits. It is over two metres high and will make an immediate impact on visitors to the stupa as they approach directly towards it up the access ramp.
